'design for people in need'

My second field trip to Kenya had a specific goal. It was time to test the educational game we had been working on for the past few months and try to find out what needs adjusting to make it really effective for certain age groups and certain communities.

Also this time we got the support from Girl Child Network (GCN), we travelled around the slums in Nairobi to test the game in different schools by using different age groups. The scenarios we assumed, while being in Europe, became more clear over there and were confirmed. The older the girls are the more they know of course about the changes in their body and the body of the opposit sex together with an increased knowlegde about AIDS and the preventions necessary. So the main areas to focus on are the young girls, girls who haven't reached the age of menstruation yet, to make sure they are well aware of what is about to happen to their body to prevent early pregnancies, early marriages, dropping out of school and leading the poor life they are leading now without any further improvements for the future. Their only option to support themselves and their child / children from ealy pregnancies is turning to prostitution to get through the day with a little bit of food in their stomach.

Let's hope that this educational game together with the distribution of sanitary towels will give these girls more insight in their future possiblities and will prevent them from harmful situations.

We have now reached the stage of finalising the game and its contents!
