Away from restyling but focusing on problems in Third World countries, is a topic we asked some last year students at the Kunsthumaniora in Hasselt (Belgium).
How do young designers approach problems that are far away from their real
world, issues that are difficult to comprehend for someone from our Western
society?
At several places in our home we just have to turn the tab to get clean, drinkable
water. But why is this an unthinkable issue in certain parts of the world?
This never occurred to be of any existence for these young students until
they received their assignment.
Problem: There is a tremendous lack of water in Third World countries. Fetching water can be a straining task taking up most of the day and costing a lot of money for them due to the high costs of water pumps. It is usually children and women who have to do such tasks AND by foot, which again is one of the reasons for them not being able to attend school.
After lots of research they all used different starting points for their concepts, going from easy ways of transporting water, making sure the water stays clean/ bacteria free till creating water by using the hot and humid climate (Kenya).
HIDO would like to thank the Kunsthumaniora in Hasselt for giving us and their
students the opportunity to come a bit closer to our goal, designing
for people in need!
